Choosing a new car can be a difficult task to some people, unless you’re a dyed in the wool petrol head then there’s a good chance you are not going to be looking for something flashy or super powered, chances are your main criteria may be how the car looks and nothing more. What many car buyers are not doing though is judging whether the car they’re looking at on the showroom forecourt matches up with what they need in a car.

Size
The size matters more than we’d think, obviously a larger vehicle will be able to accommodate more people making larger vehicles such as the Citroen Picasso and Range Rover better options for larger family groups. The downside with larger vehicles is the increase in fuel consumption. Smaller cars can have their advantages aside from lower fuel consumption, they are better for inner city driving as they can fit in smaller parking spaces which could save you a lot of time in the morning during the working commute.

Petrol or Diesel
A lot of people may not consider which fuel type to go for; those that do could make savings in other areas such as retaining value and car tax. Diesel cars used to be avoided by many motorists due to the noise they make but diesel engines are actually more fuel efficient and give off less emissions than petrol cars, especially when fitted with a particulate filter. Diesel cars can be more expensive to service though and petrol is typically cheaper to purchase than diesel and better suited to low mileage drivers.

Added Features
Looking at the additional features that a car has is also important for car buyers. Cars these days have a lot more technological advancements going on under the bonnet than we may be used to; rear parking sensors, built in satnavs and anti-locking brakes are just a few features found as standard in many new cars. Whilst this may bump the price of your chosen car up slightly, these features may be invaluable to you especially if you are not the most confident driver in the world. If you see a car that you like, it is worth asking about the extras or any details that set it apart from the competition as you may discover a feature you’d find beneficial.

The Economic Features
Now more than ever, people are more conscious of their impact on the environment and our cars are key culprits for carbon emissions. There are now cars that have features that make them more economical whether it is using a hybrid engine or new more environmentally friendly fuel sources such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), again these can help lower your car tax and so should certainly be considered to make a saving on your new car and future driving.

If you’re looking for a new car you need to make sure it meets your requirements and so checking out the new and used cars at your nearest car dealers and asking yourself these questions you should be able to get a better image of what car you should choose.

Can anyone please give me a definitive answer here ….. very conscious of keeping to speed limits on UK motorways, especially those dreaded 50mph average speed cameras, but while my speedo states I am going say 50mph, my satnav states a speed of 44mph or thereabouts. Agreed, I am probably well within the law but do car speedos vary from car to car in accuracy? And just how accurate is the satnav speed indication? Cheers ………

I’m buying a GPS (satnav) device next week. I’m hoping to get a model that comes set up for travel in the U.S.

Which ones can easily be converted to work in Europe (UK) after I return home without too much expense??
I understand that GPS devices work worldwide.

What I need to know is if I buy say a Garmin Streetpilot c320 which comes loaded with N.America maps will I be able to load street level maps for the UK and Europe when I get back home.

Or is the unit locked for only U.S. driving?
